Single top or bottom production associated with a scalar in \gamma p collision as a probe of topcolor-assisted technicolor
In the framework of the topcolor-assisted technicolor (TC2) models, we study
the productions of a single top or bottom quark associated with a scalar in
\gamma-p collision, which proceed via the subprocesses c\gamma -> t\pi_t^0,
c\gamma -> t h_t^0 and c\gamma -> b\pi^+_t mediated by the anomalous top or
bottom coupling tc\pi_t^0, tch_t^0 and bc\pi_t^+. These productions, while
extremely suppressed in the Standard Model, are found to be significantly
enhanced in the large part of the TC2 parameter space, especially the
production via c\gamma -> b\pi^+ can have a cross section of 100 fb, which may

The mission oriented terminal area simulation facility
The Mission Oriented Terminal Area Simulation (MOTAS) was developed to provide an ATC environment in which flight management and flight operations research studies can be conducted with a high degree of realism. This facility provides a flexible and comprehensive simulation of the airborne, ground-based and communication aspects of the airport terminal area environment. Major elements of the simulation are: an airport terminal area environment model, two air traffic controller stations, several aircraft models and simulator cockpits, four pseudo pilot stations, and a realistic air-ground communications network. MOTAS has been used for one study with the DC-9 simulator and a series of data link studies are planned in the near future
One-Loop Corrections to the S and T Parameters in a Three Site Higgsless Model
In this paper we compute the the one-loop chiral logarithmic corrections to
the S and T parameters in a highly deconstructed Higgsless model with only
three sites. In addition to the electroweak gauge bosons, this model contains a
single extra triplet of vector states (which we denote \rho^{\pm} and \rho^0),
rather than an infinite tower of "KK" modes. We compute the corrections to S
and T in 'tHooft-Feynman gauge, including the ghost, unphysical
Goldstone-boson, and appropriate "pinch" contributions required to obtain
gauge-invariant results for the one-loop self-energy functions. We demonstrate
that the chiral-logarithmic corrections naturally separate into two parts, a
model-independent part arising from scaling below the \rho mass, which has the
same form as the large Higgs-mass dependence of the S or T parameter in the
standard model, and a second model-dependent contribution arising from scaling
between the \rho mass and the cutoff of the model. The form of the universal
part of the one-loop result allows us to correctly interpret the
phenomenologically derived limits on the S and T parameters (which depend on a
"reference" Higgs-boson mass) in this three-site Higgsless model. Higgsless
models may be viewed as dual to models of dynamical symmetry breaking akin to
"walking technicolor", and in these terms our calculation is the first to
compute the subleading 1/N corrections to the S and T parameters. We also
discuss the reduction of the model to the ``two-site'' model, which is the
usual electroweak chiral lagrangian, noting the ``non-decoupling''

Operation of EMEP ‘supersites’ in the United Kingdom. Annual report for 2008.
As part of its commitment to the UN-ECE Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution the United Kingdom operates two ‘supersites’ reporting data to the Co-operative Programme for Monitoring and Evaluation of the Long-range Transmission of Air Pollutants in Europe (EMEP).
This report provides the annual summary for 2008, the second full calendar year of operation of the first EMEP ‘supersite’ to be established in the United Kingdom. Detailed operational reports have been submitted to Defra every 3 months, with unratified data. This annual report contains a summary of the ratified data for 2008.
The EMEP ‘supersite’ is located in central southern Scotland at Auchencorth (3.2oW, 55.8oN), a remote rural moorland site ~20 km south-west of Edinburgh. Monitoring operations started formally on 1 June 2006.
In addition to measurements made specifically under this contract, the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology also acts as local site operator for measurements made under other UK monitoring networks: the Automated Urban and Rural Network (AURN), the UK Eutrophication and Acidification Network (UKEAP), the UK Hydrocarbons Network, and the UK Heavy Metals Rural Network. Some measurements were also made under the auspices of the ‘Air Pollution Deposition Processes’ contract. All these associated networks are funded by Defra.
This report summarises the measurements made between January and December 2008, and presents summary statistics on average concentrations.
The site is dominated by winds from the south-west, but wind direction data highlight potential sources of airborne pollutants (power stations, conurbations).
The average diurnal patterns of gases and particles are consistent with those expected for a remote rural site.
The frequency distributions are presented for data where there was good data capture throughout the whole period. Some components (e.g. black carbon) show log-normal frequency distributions, while other components (e.g. ozone) have more nearly normal frequency distributions.
A case study is presented for a period in June 2008, showing the influence of regional air pollutants at this remote rural site.

Fermi-liquid behaviour of the low-density 2D hole gas in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure at large values of r_s
We examine the validity of the Fermi-liquid description of the dilute 2D hole
gas in the crossover from 'metallic'-to-'insulating' behaviour of R(T).It has
been established that, at r_s as large as 29, negative magnetoresistance does
exist and is well described by weak localisation. The dephasing time extracted
from the magnetoresistance is dominated by the T^2 -term due to Landau
scattering in the clean limit. The effect of hole-hole interactions, however,

Polynomial sequences for bond percolation critical thresholds
In this paper, I compute the inhomogeneous (multi-probability) bond critical
surfaces for the (4,6,12) and (3^4,6) lattices using the linearity
approximation described in (Scullard and Ziff, J. Stat. Mech. P03021),
implemented as a branching process of lattices. I find the estimates for the
bond percolation thresholds, p_c(4,6,12)=0.69377849... and
p_c(3^4,6)=0.43437077..., compared with Parviainen's numerical results of p_c
\approx 0.69373383 and p_c \approx 0.43430621 . These deviations are of the
order 10^{-5}, as is standard for this method, although they are outside
Parviainen's typical standard error of 10^{-7}. Deriving thresholds in this way
for a given lattice leads to a polynomial with integer coefficients, the root
in [0,1] of which gives the estimate for the bond threshold. I show how the
method can be refined, leading to a sequence of higher order polynomials making
predictions that likely converge to the exact answer. Finally, I discuss how
this fact hints that for certain graphs, such as the kagome lattice, the exact
bond threshold may not be the root of any polynomial with integer coefficients.Comment: submitted to Journal of Statistical Mechanic
SDSS-IV MANGA: Spatially Resolved Star Formation Main Sequence and LI(N)ER Sequence
We present our study on the spatially resolved H_alpha and M_star relation
for 536 star-forming and 424 quiescent galaxies taken from the MaNGA survey. We
show that the star formation rate surface density (Sigma_SFR), derived based on
the H_alpha emissions, is strongly correlated with the M_star surface density
(Sigma_star) on kpc scales for star- forming galaxies and can be directly
connected to the global star-forming sequence. This suggests that the global
main sequence may be a consequence of a more fundamental relation on small
scales. On the other hand, our result suggests that about 20% of quiescent
galaxies in our sample still have star formation activities in the outer region
with lower SSFR than typical star-forming galaxies. Meanwhile, we also find a
tight correlation between Sigma_H_alpha and Sigma_star for LI(N)ER regions,
named the resolved "LI(N)ER" sequence, in quiescent galaxies, which is
consistent with the scenario that LI(N)ER emissions are primarily powered by

Density of critical clusters in strips of strongly disordered systems
We consider two models with disorder dominated critical points and study the
distribution of clusters which are confined in strips and touch one or both
boundaries. For the classical random bond Potts model in the large-q limit we
study optimal Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters by combinatorial optimization
algorithm. For the random transverse-field Ising chain clusters are defined and
calculated through the strong disorder renormalization group method. The
numerically calculated density profiles close to the boundaries are shown to
follow scaling predictions. For the random bond Potts model we have obtained
accurate numerical estimates for the critical exponents and demonstrated that
the density profiles are well described by conformal formulae.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
Effect of screening of the Coulomb interaction on the conductivity in the quantum Hall regime
We study variable range hopping in the quantum Hall effect regime in the
presence of a metallic gate parallel to the plane of a two-dimensional electron
gas. Screening of the Coulomb interaction by the gate causes the partial
``filling'' of the Coulomb gap in the density of localized states. At low
enough temperatures this leads to a substantial enhancement and a new
temperature behavior of the hopping conductivity. As a result, the diagonal
conductivity peaks become much wider. The power law dependence of the width of
the peaks on the temperature changes: the corresponding exponent turns out to
be twice as small as that for gateless structures. The width dependences on the
current in non-ohmic regime and on the frequency for the absorption of the
electromagnetic waves experience a similar modification. The experimental
observation of the crossovers predicted may demonstrate the important role of
